City of Montreal files complaint against police
After taking on firefighters at the labour relations board, the city of Montreal has now filed a complaint against police. The city says that since the dispute over pension reforms began, police officers are issuing fewer tickets. “We believe that it has a direct relation with the working environment right now. So we feel that because of that, like we’ve been doing with the firemen, we will go through the commission of labour relations to [raise] our point,” said Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre. The city is also accusing officers of using vehicles in an unauthorized way, although the complaint does not provide more details. Law enforcement agencies are still making warrantless requests for telecom customers’ personal data months after a Supreme Court ruling appeared to shut down the practice.
Police in Canada used to ask telecom companies to voluntarily hand over data on Canadian customers more than a million times per year. In June, the Supreme Court struck down this warrantless method as an invasion of privacy.
But while the number of warrantless requests has dropped since the decision, they have not stopped, an investigation by the Star and the Halifax Chronicle Herald has found. Key players, including the country’s largest police force and a major telecom, aren’t saying whether they still send or accept them. [Read more…]
RCMP investigate officer after derogatory comments about First Nation
A derogatory online comment about people in a northern Saskatchewan First Nations community has led the RCMP to look into one of their own officers. On Monday an article was shared on a Facebook page about an incident at the Sucker River Reserve. The comment, allegedly posted by Constable Anthony Setlack, said “all drunk uneducated animals shooting at each other.” RCMP spokesperson Craig Cleary said they are looking into the comment.
