Workshop B – Building Resilient Turnaround Teams: Strengthening Mental Health, Psychological Safety and Crew Culture

Turnarounds compress months of work into weeks: 12-hour shifts, night rotations, crews who have never met, camp life away from family, and a culture that prizes toughness over honesty.
This is not a wellness talk. It treats mental health as what it is in a TA — a safety and performance issue. A worker running on empty has degraded judgment, reaction time, and situational awareness – the exact things a turnaround depends on. And the silence that keeps someone from admitting they are struggling is the same silence that stops a bad weld from getting flagged. A speak-up safety culture and a healthy crew are the same culture. This workshop builds both.
Blending discussion, practice, and cross-role work we will cover:
- Resilience & the Pressure Cooker: What resilience is — renewable, shared, and shaped by the team. Mapping the load and tracing it back to its sources.
- Mental Health on the Tools and Beyond: The cost of silence. Spotting distress early. Practicing the check-in conversation and knowing when escalation is required.
- Everyone’s Lever: Psychological safety across the system, crew, and peer lever. The cross-role Handoff exercise, where the levels finally hear each other’s needs.
- Action: A personal plan and a role-group commitment for the first 72 hours of the next turnaround.
