A community of Indians and non-Indians gathered at the Dahl Arts Center in the last days of December, the Winter Solstice, to start the fund-raising phase of the First Nations Sculpture Project to be erected at 515 West Blvd., the site of the former Sioux Museum, circa 1935. Small sculptured busts of Dr. Charles Eastman (Santee Sioux, 1858-1930), Nick Black Elk, Oglala spiritual leader (Oglala, 1863-1950), Oscar Howe, painter (Yanktonai, 1915-1983), and Vine Deloria Jr. (Ihanktowan law scholar, 1933-2005) will occupy this space. Bad weather in December may have stopped Idle No More members from celebrating their first anniversary but the movement still finished out the year with a bang by holding a flash mob at Park Place Mall on Dec. 20. “It was just to let everyone know that we’re still moving and to create awareness of the fact that we’re still here,” said William Singer, a local Idle No More organizer. “(Idle No More) is all inclusive and we’re all affected so we had a lot of non-natives joining us that evening; it was very good.” [Read More…]Live Industry News
