Workshop A — Simplifying and Accelerating Renewable Energy Procurement

Oct 21, 2025 9:00 am – 12:30 pm

Registration opens at 9:00 am

As utility costs continue to increase, interest is growing from institutions and corporations to purchase renewable energy directly from developers. This practice, known as off-site non-utility procurement, can increase energy costs while helping achieve sustainability targets and contribute to local economic development. Alberta’s deregulated energy market permits companies to purchase renewable energy directly from suppliers by way of virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs).

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Strategies for sourcing renewable energy directly from suppliers
  • Reviewing why Alberta is an ideal market for non-utility renewable energy procurement
  • Lessons learned and successes from active players in Alberta’s procurement market
  • Outlining how to obtain financing for Power Purchase Agreements
