Workshop B — Building Lasting Capacity for Emergency Management and Disaster Relief: Best Practices for Grant Applications and Passing on Knowledge and Responsibilities
Capacity for writing successful grant applications can be a challenge for smaller Indigenous groups with less resources. Given this challenge, this workshop will first provide best practices for writing applications to obtain funding for emergency management and disaster relief – an essential priority. Part II of the workshop will focus on strategies for ensuring that, when grant money runs out or when there is turnover in the office, existing knowledge and frameworks can be passed on.
Topics of discussion include:
Part I: Essentials of Grant Writing
- Assessing the needs of your community for disaster relief and emergency management
- Discovering the grants and other funding available for emergency management and disaster relief
- Understanding the timelines for the grant writing and submission process
- Understanding what submissions make grant applications more likely to succeed
Part II: Preparing for Long Term Oversight
- Scouting out additional members of the community who can be trained in emergency management and disaster relief
- Setting aside time to train members early
- Holding information sessions on a regular basis
- Utilizing documentation and other systems to capture knowledge and planning
