This workshop provides a foundational understanding of health economics and its practical impact on drug access and reimbursement in Canada. Participants will explore key concepts including cost-effectiveness, budget impact, health technology assessment (HTA), and value-based pricing. Through interactive exercises, attendees will learn how economic evaluations influence policy, payer decisions, and patient access.

Case Study
Using a hypothetical case study of a fictional drug, participants will examine how cost-effectiveness, budget impact, and real-world evidence guide HTA recommendations and reimbursement decisions, highlighting challenges in ensuring patient access to high-cost therapies.

  • Applying core health economics principles to evaluate drug access scenarios
  • Understanding cost-effectiveness and budget impact to inform policy and payer decisions
  • Using economic reasoning to assess HTA and reimbursement scenarios
  • Communicating evidence-based value arguments effectively to stakeholders
  • Examining how clinical uncertainty can affect funding and patient access decisions
