Workshop B – Integrating Traditional Indigenous Knowledge in Environmental Assessments

Nov 18, 2026 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Combining western science with Traditional Indigenous Knowledge (TIK) is helping many organizations achieve more successful outcomes during the environmental assessment process. However, incorporating TIK in the assessment process can be challenging without having a pre-existing an established relationship with the Indigenous community where you are conducting the assessment. This workshop will equip attendees with actionable strategies on how to best partner with Indigenous communities during the entire assessment process.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Collaborating with Indigenous knowledge-holders and guardians from day one of assessments
  • Engaging communities through co-designed tracking and reporting methods
  • Integrating land-based education into long-term monitoring and stewardship
  • Incorporating TIK and creating meaningful engagement during project selection to manage concerns earlier
  • Sharing best practices for successful projects
