Labour Market Outlook for Maintenance and Construction Across CanadaBob Collins These are interesting times in construction and maintenance across Canada. Industry is undergoing the most dramatic demographic shift in its history with close to a quarter of the construction and maintenance workforce expected to retire over the next decade. At the same time, after more than a decade-long construction expansion, new resource development investment slows as some projects wind down and others are delayed in the shadow of lower commodity prices and changing global demands. Sustaining workforce capacity during slower periods of growth, while addressing an aging workforce may become increasingly more difficult. Interpreting labour market signals is particularly challenging under these conditions. Bob Collins of BuildForce Canada will share his insights on the next decade for the construction industry. |

Workshop A | Bullet-Proof Scheduling to Elevate Your Turnaround Performance
Colin Xander
Maintenance, Engineering, and Overhauls Manager
Lucite International
What is it about?
(Registration Opens at 8:00 am)
This workshop will delve into detailed scheduling, addressing the common and inevitable areas where schedules break down:
- Engaging schedulers early in the process for more effective scheduling
- Ensuring the schedule is communicated to all stakeholders to avoid surprises; using contractor input in the pre-planning stage before it’s too late to modify the schedule
- Moving from the spreadsheet to a resource loaded schedule
- How do you perform a good schedule review?
- Assessing the usual areas where schedules break down
Building your P6 Schedule
- What kind of detail is necessary for an effective critical path?
- How to ensure your base scope fits within the calendar and how to adjust if necessary
- How do you manage schedule reporting during the event?
Workshop B | Real-Life Outcomes — Productivity Excellence During Shutdowns, Turnarounds, and Outages (STOs)
Walter Pesenti
Managing Director
Berkeley Research Group LLC
What is it about?
(Registration Opens at 12:30 pm)This workshop will cover quickly employable ways to address 10 top crafts productivity pain points (e.g., walking, waiting, delays, work definition, equipment preparation, permitting), based on STO expert advice and industry feedback received.
Additionally, the workshop will show potential ways to use tools like Lean Core Concepts and Rapid Kaizen to avoid waste and streamline STO execution. These tools drive quick-hit value by implementing “do-now” solutions through waste elimination, and they increase process speed and efficiency through employee (company and contractors) involvement.
Topics covered will include:
- How can energy companies identify waste, reduce downtime, and lower costs during STO execution events?
- How can STO schedules be used as communication tools, and how can meetings be made more effective and efficient?
- What are best strategies for planning and sequencing STOs?
- What are the most useful management tools, and how can they be used to make execution decisions?
- How can best practices from downstream and chemicals be employed across the entire oil and gas value chain?
- How can we combine best-in-class Equipment Maintenance Strategies, within the energy industry and across others, with the STO approach to maximize effectiveness?
Key highlights of this session:
Elimination of waste in STOs Reduction of cycle time to execute STOs Reduction of STOs cost Increased margins around STOs
