The regulatory scheme of gaming in Canada is complex and often unclear. The various types of gambling that are permitted to operate under regional compliance obligations differ from province to province. Online gaming occupies a grey area of the law and other gaming schemes raise legality issues under the Criminal Code of Canada. This pre-conference workshop is designed as an intensive introductory course to provide you with the foundation knowledge to be able to enter this dynamic field. Attend this workshop to get up to speed on the intricacies of land-based gaming and the essential elements of online gaming law.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding the legal framework of land-based and online gaming
    • What is the role of the federal and provincial schemes?
  • How do the existing provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada apply to land-based and online gaming activities?
  • What are the different provincial schemes for setting up gaming activities?
  • Are you allowed to advertise to Canadian customers?
  • How does the non-profit sector participate in gaming through charitable gaming?
    • Key requirements for setting up a charitable gaming operation
  • Managing relationships with operators, regulators and lottery corporations
  • Understanding the legal status of online gaming in Canada
  • Learning from key case law in land-based and online gaming
  • Examining to what extent can private companies and non-governmental bodies offer gaming activities?
